John Ford
John Ford’s atmospheric landscapes capture qualities of light and a sense of place in a most evocative manner. The paintings range from images of dramatic evening skies to light-filled forest interiors and pale ocean vistas. His landscapes of Ireland and the New England countryside are processed through memory and observation, and create a distinctive mood of both specific and composite locations.
“...Ford’s palette can change from soft pastels that hint at barely perceptible changes in light to bright color combinations that sharply delineate a marsh or field without descending into well-worn landscape cliches. His brush strokes can give proper evanescence to a sky, or they can dig into the canvas to produce rough wilderness textures...Ford’s landscapes linger in the mind like music heard long ago but not forgotten. He has found ways to negotiate the strictures of tradition while maintaining their best qualities; without their reinventing the wheel, his paintings feel like things newly discovered.”
