David Halliday

David Halliday’s photographs are created with painstaking attention to detail, structure and compositional design. A darkroom perfectionist, Halliday’s baroque still lifes are illuminated with chiaroscuro lighting and are composed of intriguing arrangements of fruits, vegetables and assorted objects. The images in Halliday’s Box Series were created in Italy, employing an antique biscotti tin. This series uses the tin as a room or stage into which Halliday carefully arranges fruits, palmettos and insects to create compositions that convey a mythical, spiritual and timeless quality.

David Halliday studied photography at Syracuse University and pursued further studies under the tutelage of renowned photographer, Arnold Newman. He has traveled extensively to such diverse locales as Bali, Tonga, Italy and Ireland, seeking inspiration and renewal of his creative vision through the constant change of scenery and encounters with new cultures. His photographs have been exhibited throughout the country and his work was the subject of a major retrospective in 2002 entitled, When Time Stands Still, at the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans. Halliday was born in Glen Cove, NY and moved to New Orleans in 1991, where he now lives and works.
