Elizabeth MacDermid

The fluidity and motion of water have appealed to Elizabeth MacDermid’s sensibility for as long as she can remember. Traveling with a camera, she compiles images that record such incidents as the patterning of ripples across the surface of a pond or the contrast of light and shadow on water’s surface. The artist then manipulates the images in the computer, taking the initial abstraction found in the landscape and exaggerating it to achieve a more dramatic effect. From this “sketching” in the computer, the artist comes closer to the image she envisions for her paintings.

The paintings that comprise her Anatomy of Water series, convey the physical properties of water - its splash, swirl and movement - both through inference and in their tactile presence. A related component of the series are wall-mounted and freestanding sculptures - a relatively new direction for the artist. These mixed media works, composed of lead, graphite, latex and wood, offer a complimentary dialogue to the two-dimensional paintings.

Elizabeth MacDermid received a Bachelor of Science degree in Fine Arts from Skidmore College, NY in addition to pursuing graduate studies at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. Her work has been exhibited in selected group exhibitions throughout New England and is represented in many distinguished private and corporate collections.
